MultiLit Reading Tutor Program (Revised)

Who is the Reading Tutor Program for?

The program is suitable for both primary (from Year 1) and high school students who are struggling with or falling behind their peers in their reading skills.

Learning to read using the nationally recognised MultiLit Reading Tutor Program

Annie’s Centre is proud to announce that it can offer highly qualified staff who have been specifically trained in carrying out the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program to struggling readers and their families.

Reading is one of the most important skills we learn and is a skill needed throughout life. However, some people find it especially difficult to learn to read. They require support and intensive teaching to develop their reading skills. MultiLit (Making Up For Lost Time In Literacy) is a research initiative of Macquarie University. It is both nationally and internationally recognised as an effective literacy intervention program based on sound scientific principles and research. In fact, the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program was chosen by the NSW Department of Education (DET) for the National Partnership Program. In 2013 ‘Literacy and Numeracy Interventions in the Early Years of Schooling: A Literature Review’ by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), MultiLit was highlighted as one of only two literacy intervention programs for which there is a strong base of research supporting the effectiveness of the program. MultiLit was also mentioned specifically as an example of a program that would be included in the Australian Government’s 2013 ‘Reading Blitz’ initiative.

What does the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program involve?

The MultiLit Reading Tutor Program involves working intensively and directly with students and in partnership with parents and at times, teachers. At Annie’s Centre we are offering the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program via 3 sessions a week, with each session being 45 minutes to one-hour in duration, for approximately one school term (10 weeks, 30 sessions provided in total). MultiLit programs target word attack skills, sight word reading and reinforced reading skills. MultiLit offer proven methods to improve reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension. Whilst spelling is not a specific target of the program, improvements in spelling are often seen as a result of the program.

Who delivers the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program (Revised)

Highly trained and experienced Speech Pathologists, Clinical Psychologists and Behaviour Therapists deliver the programs at Annie’s Centre. Consistent with existing MulitLit research, the program is delivered over three, 45 minute sessions each week for a period of 10 weeks. Unlike literacy instruction typically provided in the school setting, MultiLit sessions are delivered on a one-to-one basis at Annie’s Centre. This ensures that your child receives the attention and individualised instruction required for successful literacy development.

Why choose MultiLit?

MultiLit is a highly structured program which provides an intensive focus on developing reading skills. Research has shown that students with reading problems, taught using MultiLit make extraordinary gains in literacy skills over short periods of time. MultiLit continues to research, review and develop it’s programs to ensure that the MultiLit programs and services provided are constantly the best they can be to achieve best practice reading instruction with foundations in evidence-based education. MultiLit aims to improve the reading skills of low-progress readers, which in turn improves the life opportunities of struggling readers. Thousands of low progress readers throughout Australia have benefited from the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program. Those children who have already been through the MultiLit program at Annie’s Centre have not only improved their reading skills but have also shown improved confidence in themselves and their reading abilities. The children appear to enjoy attending their MultiLit sessions and appear to get satisfaction from seeing how their reading improves.

Why choose Annie’s Centre for MultiLit?

MultiLit is now being offered more widely, especially in schools. However, all too often schools can lack the time and resources in order to deliver the program in the intensive format of 3 individual sessions per week with each session lasting at least 45 minutes to an hour. The research evidence for MultiLit was based on the intensive delivery of the program. Where schools are able to offer some MultiLit, the staff at Annie’s centre will work to liaise with schools in order to work together to provide the maximum input to your child.

The staff at Annie’s Centre are experienced in delivering the MultiLit programs. Assessment of your child’s reading skills both pre and post program is carried out by the Speech Pathologists on staff.

MultiLit Word Attack Skills Extension Program

Who is the Word Attack Skills Extension Program for?

The program is designed to work on higher level reading skills which are generally targeted from Year 4. This program would be suitable for those children in Year 4 or above who have either already completed the Reading Tutor Program or who are already skilled at sounding out and blending skills and need help extending their reading skills to target more complex skills such as decoding multisyllabic words.

What does the MultiLit Word Attack Skills Extension Program involve?

This Extension Program is delivered in the same format as the Reading Tutor Program, in that it works intensively with the students one on one, as well as in collaboration with parents. At Annie’s Centre the MultiLit Word Attack Skills Extension Program is delivered via 3 sessions a week, with each session being 45 minutes to one-hour in duration, for approximately one school term (10 weeks, 30 sessions provided in total). This program targets word attack skills at a higher level such as in multisyllabic words as well as teaching common letter combinations (including those that occur at the start and end of words) and reinforced reading skills. MultiLit offer proven methods to improve reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension. Spelling practise is also built into the Extension program.
